Tea’s that don’t contain plastic

Do your teabags contain microplastics?

If you’re using a plastic tea bag, you could be pouring microplastics and nanoplastics into your cup of daily tea.

It was found that a single plastic teabag released about 11.6bn microplastic and 3.1bn smaller nanoplastic particles into the hot water that you drink.

Loose leaf is the obvious best choice, but if you’re looking for some brands that don’t use plastic, I can recommend the following:

Most organic teas contain tea bags that are either compostable, made with paper or plant-based materials like cornstarch or hemp. If in doubt reach out to the companies to double check. Also try to avoid tea bags with a tiny staple as the staple won’t ever degrade or disappear.

Please note organic Nerada tea still uses a tiny amount of plastic- they describe it here: Our filter paper is manufactured using a blend of high-quality manila hemp, which does contain a tiny percentage (less than 2%) of food-grade synthetic fibers. Rest assured that this paper is very different from the pyramid silken type bags made from Nylon or PET that have been reported as being problematic in the press. They are in the process of making it completely plastic free.
