Mattress protectors
Most mattress protectors are made to be waterproof and understandably for life’s little accidents we want to protect our costly mattress and pillows.
Unfortunately, most protectors are coated with a Vinyl/PVC lining (this is what makes it waterproof). PVC contains dangerous chemical additives including phthalates, lead, cadmium, and/or organotins, which can be toxic to your child’s health. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a known human carcinogen. Plasticisers are used in PVC to soften it and make it flexible enough to use as mattress protectors or pads. They contain phthalates which have been linked to:
* Reproductive harm
* Asthma
* Early onset of puberty
* Cancer
* Kidney and liver damage
These phthalates are weakly bound to the vinyl and leach or off-gas into the surrounding air that your child breathes in which increases with their body warmth.
If you definitely need a waterproof cover, aim for a Polyurethane or PUL ideally with an organic top like organic cotton or bamboo followed by organic sheets.
If you don’t need waterproofing but would like a protector, anything organic cotton, organic cotton flannel or organic bamboo is ideal and bonus points if it holds the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® or the certified GOTS organic labelling. Wool mattress pads can be another alternative but are not completely waterproof and can be allergenic to some.
Often protectors made of mostly bamboo are hypoallergenic and recommended for allergy sufferers and asthmatics as they are naturally antimicrobial and wick away moisture.
